Whirlpool Washer F9E1 code: Long drain (washer not draining)
The washer ran its drain pump but the water level did not drop in the expected time (about 8-10 minutes). Top-loaders may show this as Ld or drn, and older front-loaders as F21; they all point to a drain problem.
Most common causes
- Kinked, crushed or clogged drain hose
- Drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe (siphoning) or taped airtight
- Clogged drain pump filter or coin trap (front-loaders)
- Excess suds from too much or non-HE detergent
- Failed drain pump or an object stuck in the pump
What you can safely check yourself
- Straighten the drain hose and check it for kinks or clogs.
- Make sure the hose goes no more than about 4.5 inches into the standpipe and is not sealed with tape.
- On front-loaders with an access door, clean the drain pump filter (have towels ready for water).
- Use only HE detergent in the recommended amount.
- Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, plug it back in and start a new cycle to see if the code clears.
Unplug the appliance before moving or cleaning anything. Do not open panels, touch gas connections or bypass safety switches.
