Washer Won’t Spin or Drain? Here Is What Is Actually Wrong

"My washer won’t spin" and "my washer won’t drain" get lumped together because the result looks the same: a load of soaking clothes. They are different faults, and the washer will not spin until it has drained, so drain comes first.
Is it a drain problem or a spin problem?
Water still in the tub at the end of the cycle: drain problem. Tub empty but clothes dripping wet and the drum never got up to speed: spin problem. Water gone and clothes merely damp: probably a slow-spin or unbalanced-load problem. Front-loaders will also refuse to spin with a door lock fault, and top-loaders with a lid switch fault.
Drain problems: pump, hose, filter
Front-load washers have a small filter door at the bottom front. Put a towel down, open it slowly (water comes out), and pull the coin trap — socks, hair ties, coins and bra wires end up here and jam the pump. Top-loaders have no filter; the drain hose can kink behind the machine or be pushed too far down the standpipe, creating a siphon lock. If the filter and hose are clear and the washer hums at the drain step without moving water, the drain pump has failed.
Spin problems on top-loaders
Modern top-loaders will not spin with the lid unlocked, and lid lock assemblies fail more than any other part on them — the lock light blinks, the washer stops before spin. Older top-loaders use a lid switch that fails the same way. If the lock is fine, the drive belt, motor coupler or shifter/actuator (on Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore models) is next. A washer that agitates but will not spin is classic coupler or actuator.
Spin problems on front-loaders
Door lock first: if the door does not click locked, no spin. Then the motor and its rotor position sensor (LG and Samsung), or the drive belt. A front-loader that spins but sounds like a jet engine has a failed tub bearing — the one repair we price against the age of the machine, because it is labor-heavy.
The unbalanced-load trap
A single heavy item — a bath mat, one pair of jeans, a comforter — makes the washer detect an unbalanced load and refuse to reach full spin. Samsung shows UE, LG shows UE, Whirlpool shows a spinning-slowly symptom with no code. Redistribute the load and re-run a spin cycle before assuming a part has failed. If it happens with every load, the suspension rods or shock absorbers are worn.
