Dryer Taking Two Cycles to Dry? It Is Almost Always One of These

A dryer that used to dry a load in 45 minutes and now needs two cycles has one of two things wrong: it is not getting rid of the hot, wet air, or it is not making enough heat. Airflow is the cause far more often than heat, and it is the one you can check yourself.
It is also the one that matters. Lint is the fuel in the great majority of home dryer fires, and a dryer that runs long is a dryer whose vent is holding heat.
The 30-second airflow test
Run the dryer on high heat and go outside to the vent hood. You should feel a strong, warm stream of air and see the flap held fully open. Weak, warm, damp air — or none — means the vent is restricted. If the vent hood is clogged with lint or a bird has nested in it, you have found your problem.
The lint path you never see
Empty the lint screen, then look into the slot it came out of with a flashlight. Lint packs into that housing and into the blower behind it. A vacuum crevice tool pulls a surprising amount out. Then pull the dryer out and inspect the flex duct behind it: crushed, kinked or foil-taped ducts are the most common restriction of all, especially when a dryer has been pushed hard against the wall.
How long is your vent run?
Every foot of duct and every 90-degree elbow adds resistance. Orlando homes with the laundry room in the middle of the house can have 25-foot runs with three elbows going up through the attic, and those need cleaning every year or two. A full vent clean and airflow test is on our price book and we do it in the same visit as any dryer repair.
When it is the heat, not the airflow
If the vent test is strong and the dryer still runs cold or lukewarm: on an electric dryer the heating element has partly burnt (it can fail in sections, so it heats a little), or the cycling thermostat is opening early. On a gas dryer the igniter or flame sensor is weakening so the burner cycles on late or not at all. A failed moisture sensor will also make an auto-dry cycle stop early or run forever. All of these are one-visit repairs with inexpensive parts.

The thermal fuse trap
Here is how a vent problem becomes a "dryer stopped heating" call: restricted airflow overheats the dryer, the one-time thermal fuse blows, and the dryer runs cold forever after. Replacing the fuse without fixing the airflow just blows the new one. We replace the fuse and clean the vent together.
