Refrigerator Not Cooling? 7 Causes, From Free Fixes to Real Repairs

A refrigerator that has stopped cooling in Florida gives you about four hours before food is unsafe, so this guide is in order of "check this first". The first three take ten minutes and cost nothing. If none of them is your problem, you will at least know what to tell the technician — and roughly what the fix costs.
One important clue up front: is the freezer still cold? If the freezer is fine and only the fridge section is warm, the compressor is working and the problem is almost certainly airflow or defrost — a moderate repair. If both are warm, keep reading; it can still be simple.
1. It is set wrong, or something bumped the dial
Check the temperature setting. Kids, a grocery bag or a cleaning wipe can turn a dial or tap a touch control. Fridge should be 37–40°F, freezer 0°F. If the display is dark, check the outlet with a lamp and check the breaker. If it is in a garage, note that some garage outlets are on a GFCI that trips in humidity.
2. The doors are not sealing
Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is not sealing there. Also check that a shelf, drawer or a tall bottle is not holding the door slightly open — the most common cause of frost in the freezer and a warm fridge. A gasket is a real part, but a door held ajar by a crooked crisper drawer is a free fix.
3. The condenser coils are filthy
The coils are either underneath behind the front kick-plate or on the back. In Florida homes with pets they clog with fur and dust in a year. Unplug the fridge, pull the plate, and vacuum with a brush attachment. A clogged condenser makes the compressor run hot and constantly and can push the fridge from cold to lukewarm on a 95°F day. Twenty minutes, no parts.
4. The evaporator coil has frosted over (defrost system)
This is the single most common repair we do. The evaporator coil inside the freezer wall ices up until air cannot pass through it; the freezer stays cold but the fridge, which gets its cold air from that coil through a fan, warms up. Signs: the freezer back wall is frosty or bulging, and you may hear the fan rattling on ice.
The cause is a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat (bi-metal), or the control that runs the defrost cycle. Manually defrosting the fridge for 24 hours gets it working again — for a few weeks, until the ice rebuilds. The repair replaces the failed defrost component and is a one-visit job.
5. The evaporator or condenser fan has died
Open the freezer, hold the door switch, and listen for the fan. Silence, or a loud buzz with no airflow, means the evaporator fan motor has seized. Behind or under the fridge, the condenser fan should also spin whenever the compressor runs; if it does not, the compressor overheats and shuts off on its overload — the fridge cools in short bursts and then stops. Both are moderate, one-visit repairs.
6. A sensor or the control board is lying
A thermistor that reads the wrong temperature tells the board the box is cold when it is not, and the board stops calling for cooling. Symptoms are erratic — cools for a day, warms for a day, or freezes lettuce in the fridge section. Thermistors are cheap; boards are not, and a technician confirms which before ordering anything.
7. The compressor or sealed system
If both compartments are warm, the compressor is silent or clicking every few minutes, and the condenser is clean, the compressor start relay may have failed (an inexpensive part) or the compressor itself has. A sealed-system leak shows up as a compressor that runs constantly with a slowly warming box. These are the repairs where age matters: on a unit under 8 years it may be worth it; on an older one we will usually say replace, and you only pay the diagnostic.
